Let's face it, all professional service providers
have had to endure unsavory behavior from their known or unknown
peers at one time or another. Just glance at past or recent
headlines and you'll find the legal, accounting, or financial
industries being scrutinized, or at times vilified, for
something. Our industry does not have to define us. Our
own character, integrity, and track record does that for us.
But what if your prospective clients don't yet know this about
you? How do you gain their confidence in the midst of
unflattering headlines about your industry?
Let someone else speak for you. I'm a big proponent of
referral partners, which I define as a trusted advisor in the same
or different industry who I respect and who has a similar, yet not competitive,
target market as mine and who refers clients to me when my type of
service is needed. I've heard others say that you can
promote anyone, but yourself. Let client testimonials,
referral partners, peers and other influencers speak for you.
Of course, you need to take the time and make the effort to build
good relationships within your network, and provide them with
value, before they can provide you with an effective referral,
testimonial, or introduction.
Professionals resoundingly state that they get the majority of
their business by referral. Examine your referral partners
and past client lists, and see where most of your current business
is coming from. Maybe it is time to build relationships with
more people just like them, and/or strengthen relationships that
are working.
Headlines, challenging economies, and other negative PR won't
matter so much if your good relationships are strong and
plentiful. If your list isn't as robust as you'd
like, let's talk.

"I
hired Lori to assist with marketing ideas for my law firm. Lori
provided great feedback and ideas. In addition, Lori has introduced
me to many potential strategic partners and clients. I will continue
to use Lori to assist me in growing my firm. Lori is a great person
to know!" Bruce
Redman, The Redman Law Firm
"Lori
Williams is a great connector of people. I have only known and
worked with her for a couple of months, but she has introduced me to
multiple professionals. I don't pretend to know her process for
the people she decides to work with, but everyone I have met with so
far at her suggestion, has been a caring, experienced professional in
their field. I expect to develop multiple referral partners
through her introductions, and also to improve my networking skills,
under her guidance." Jim
Williams, CFP, CCPS, Jim Williams Financial
"Lori
is a networker and a natural connector. I have known Lori for years
and have had the pleasure of working with her on a variety of levels
and am impressed each and every time. Lori is prompt with updates,
extremely accountable and very forward thinking. Lori has come
through for my friends and clients in need of legal advice by
connecting them to the appropriate specialist with the expertise they
needed. Lori is also mindful of what attorneys and other professional
service providers need when it comes to marketing. While these
professionals are skilled in their practice, they often do not have
the training, expertise, or time to market themselves effectively.
Lori has helped many of her consulting clients and other contacts by
identifying opportunities to enhance their marketing materials, and
has recommend the right marketing specialist to provide logos,
websites, videos, brochures or whatever else the client needed. I've
been grateful for the opportunity to work with various professionals
within Lori's network on a project basis to assist with their
marketing needs." Jason
Ryan, Managing Member of Vision Fuel Media

Books:
This book really speaks to the professional service
provider, because we are all trusted advisors to our clients.
You won't gain their business until you gain their trust. One
of my favorite quotes from this book is: "if the essence (of the
relationship) is wrong, you'll spend 90% of your time on
form". So true!
Creating Sales Velocity, by:
Matthew Ferry
I
have not yet read this book, but thought it sounded
interesting. It teaches you how to look at the sales process of
gaining a client in a new way, while dramatically increasing your
results.
